The Story Behind ConvertPods: Written by Founder Alan Magliocca
As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. In 2002 I graduated high school and went to the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. I went there because they had one of the best business schools on the east coast, and it was an honor for me to be accepted. It was my freshman year of college that I began typing the infamous search on Google, “how to make money online”. The internet was still in its infancy, but I had seen some ads that promoted books, audio course, and video course on how to make money online.
I began to buy and dive into these courses, but had no success with any of them. I kept trying until my junior year of college with no sales at all, then I entered an elective class called Entrepreneurship. I figured that class would help me gain clarity of the online course I bought, and maybe I could make things work once I had a deeper understanding of what entrepreneurship actually is. The only problem is this, fast forward to the end of the semester and I was given a “D” in that entrepreneurship class.
You wanna talk about a swift kick in the you know what? Well, that was exactly what I felt. I felt like my whole life I’d been dreaming of something that I ended up not being good at. I did end up graduating from UNCW with a degree in business management and minor in marketing, but I didn’t use the sheet of paper at all.
At that point, I ended up just working at our family’s local business, a construction company. But each night, I would come home from my job and continue working on this whole online business thing. Long story short, in 2009 I had a major breakthrough. I discovered the importance of mentorship, and with my mortgage due in 15 days, I emptied my bank account to hire this mentor.
By the way I don’t recommend anyone do this, nor is this financial advice, I’m simply sharing my personal story with you. Anyways, after that everything changed for me. I was crushing it as an affiliate marketer and also building out my own offers and launching them. As time went by, I noticed something. Other marketers in my industry were not only launching their offers by using a sales funnel, but they were also inviting their new buyers to join them for a free live webinar event. Once I learned how to implement that for myself, my numbers literally doubled overnight. I was able to convert a $7 buyer into a $1000 to $5000 client on the back end of all my main offers, so I was happy as a lark.
But as time went by, webinar numbers began to decline. Luckily, someone came up with an answer, which was to automate the webinars and run them 24-7. This was great because you didn’t have to hop on live every time, plus you were able to split test webinars. Once you found a winner you could just run that one 24-7 and crush it. And then a few years ago, the evergreen webinar model began to crumble.
There are several reasons for this, but the main reason I believe is because of video embedding issues. You now had to click on the video for it to start playing with audio. This delivered a major blow to the evergreen webinar model because it was clearly not live. In addition to that, your webinar is being hosted on your website, which also took away from the live feel and allowed viewers to toggle to other tabs to check social media and do other things. If you ask any online business owner with major success what the most important metric is, it’s attention. If you’re not keeping your audience’s attention, you’re simply not going to win in this game.
Another major issue I saw was the chat boxes were essentially fake. If anyone typed in the box, you couldn’t reply in real time. If you can’t communicate in real time with the viewer, and you’re running your so-called live event on your website, you’re clearly not live. There were many other issues but those are a few of the main ones.
My point is that the evergreen webinar model broke, and it needed to be fixed.
Well, around Thanksgiving or shortly after in 2021, I was reading a FaceBook post about running a new type of VSL, or video sales letter. I began thinking of better ways to monetize content, whether it was an audio file or a video file, whether it was a webinar replay or a VSL, whether it was an online course, audio book, or a podcast, I wanted to create a way to better monetize any audio or video file. And I wanted to do this in a way that would evolve the way entrepreneurs could attract, engage, and convert their audiences into loyal customers through new technology and automations.
So after weeks of deep thought on this, I came up with the name of my software, deciding to call it ConvertPods.
